Mary Delich Lukson

Hi, my name is Iris. I'm going to introduce you to Mary Delich Lukson. Mary was my great grandma. She was born on April 2, 1918 and died August 25, 2013. That was 3 days before I was born. My great grandma Mary lived to 96. I picked my great grandma because she and her siblings all had to go to different foster homes, but later on they all found each other!

I love playing sports, just like my grandma! She played volleyball when she was a kid and kept playing until she was 90! 90 is pretty old in general, a lot of people do not even live to 90. But Mary was still playing volleyball while other people just watched.

Mary did not like it when people did not finish their food. If she were alive today she would get mad at me even if I just had one carrot left. Mary did not like it when people did not finish their food because when she was in the orphanage they did not get very much food. So whatever they got they ate! Mary lived during the Great Depression.

Her dad died from Tuberculosis this caused him to lose a bunch of weight. In the Great Depression there were not a lot of supplies. He did not have enough good healthy food, her dad was unable to recover. Sadly Mary’s dad died. Her and all of her siblings had to go to the orphanage because her mom could not take care of 6 kids all by herself. They were all separated into cottages based on their ages. Mary and all her siblings, and other orphans, had to eat food like oatmeal, creamed codfish, and tapioca which all of the kids called frog eyes. Eventually, Mary and her siblings were sent to different foster homes. They never really got to see each other and they did not know where or how to find each other. Later in life Mary and all of her siblings were able to find each other!

Mary’s parents immigrated from Serbia in the early 1900’s so Mary spoke 2 languages; English and Serbian. Me and Mary have the same nose. Me and Mary both love cooking. We also both love playing sports. I play soccer, I do track, and gymnastics. Mary played volleyball and tennis. Mary also tried to teach my brother how to count in Serbian when my brother was 2. That was just a few things that happened in Mary's 96 year life span.
