All About Marian

In 4th grade I have been learning about poetry. There is a poem in my house written by my great-grandma, Marian Shakespear. I decided to write my essay about her. This is the poem she wrote.

“Home is a rock-a-bye baby place, a kiss-it-better place. Home is a hot bread and butter place. It is a playing place, a dreaming place, a working place, a resting place. Home is a crying place, a praying place, a place of healing. Home is a house filled with love, laughter and music. Home is a curling up with a good book place, a study place, a place of learning. Home is a gathering place, a wall-to-wall-beds place.”

The reason I like this poem is because it’s cheerful and it reminds me of my home. Some things I read about my great-grandma Marian is that when she was growing up she was poor. But, she was still very happy even though she had three brothers and four sisters. Crazy, right? Education was important to her parents and they made sure that Marian and all of her brothers and sisters had a good education. Once when Marian was at school, a girl in her class asked her to help her with her math for a candy bar. The girl in her class owned a grocery store, so she had candy every day. Marian really wanted to help because she rarely got candy and never from the grocery store. Marian went through the math problems with the girl, but the girl wasn’t really listening that much. The next day the girl actually gave her a candy bar. Everytime the teacher wasn’t looking, Marian would go down and take a bite. She always remembered the taste of that cherry bar. When she grew up she became a teacher. She got married to Vernal Shakespear and had 7 children, 2 girls and 5 boys. They lived on a farm in Tropic, Utah.

When I asked my Grandma to tell me about her mom she said that Marian loved to sing. Some of the high school classes she taught were music, Spanish, P.E., and typing. She sewed dresses and sold them so that she could buy her first typewriter. She loved writing. Her favorite thing to write was poetry. She was very nice and loved her family. She worked hard and lived a simple, happy life.
